Downtown Outreach

Supporting Those in Need in Our Community

Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) play an important role in keeping our downtowns welcoming, safe, and vibrant for everyone. Part of that work includes addressing the challenges of homelessness with compassion and care. By working alongside businesses, property owners, social service providers, and local agencies, BIDs help bring people together to find real solutions. This collaboration ensures that the needs of those experiencing homelessness are considered while also supporting the expectations of residents, visitors, and businesses who call downtown home.

In downtown Oklahoma City, our BID invests directly in outreach efforts that connect individuals to the resources they need most. This includes simple but meaningful acts like welfare check-ins, helping people replace lost identification, coordinating transportation, or connecting someone with housing opportunities. By building these connections, our outreach efforts create pathways to long-term stability while also supporting a healthy and thriving downtown community.

OUTREACH RESOURCES

In Oklahoma City, initiatives targeting homelessness demonstrate a multi-pronged approach encompassing emergency services, outreach, housing programs, and collaborative partnerships. These efforts aim to address the multifaceted needs of the homeless population and reduce their reliance on emergency services as the primary point of contact.

EMSA / FIRE

EMSA and the OKC Fire Department respond to medical emergencies, fire emergencies, and life-threatening situations. Firefighters are crucial in providing immediate assistance in various emergency scenarios, while waiting for or alongside an EMSA or OKCFD ambulance.

OKC Police Homeless Outreach Team (HOT)

The purpose of the HOT is to ensure OKC Police Department remains sensitive to the unique needs of the homeless population while responding to the concerns of the greater community. HOT works with homeless individuals, linking them with valuable social services to improve their living conditions. The Homeless Outreach Team is comprised of two officers/sergeants and one lieutenant.

The unit typically works Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. but they periodically vary their schedule to address needs at specific times.

Mental Health Association Oklahoma (MHAOK)

MHAOK Rapid Response team in Oklahoma City engages with individuals experiencing chronic, unsheltered homelessness wherever they are — under bridges, in encampments, or on sidewalks. Chronic homelessness refers to those who have been unhoused for more than one year, or have experienced at least four episodes of homelessness in the past three years.

This group typically works Monday through Friday.

Mobile Integrated Healthcare (MIH)

MIH is a program within the Oklahoma City Fire Department’s Operations Division that provides an alternative response to 911 calls involving mental health or behavioral health needs. In addition to law enforcement or traditional emergency services, MIH is a new emergency response that connects residents to trained mental health professionals and support teams who can best meet their unique needs.

Green Team Outreach | Downtown BID

The Green Team and the Business Improvement District (BID) play an important role by keeping downtown a safe, clean, and welcoming place to work, live, and visit. The BID-funded Green Team provides supplemental cleaning and safety services within the six downtown neighborhoods of the Downtown Oklahoma City Business Improvement District.
