Virtual Lecture: livia Drusilla and Powerful Elite Women In Imperial Rome

May 16, 2021 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Sunday, May 16, 1 pm Central time
$30 members/$40 non-members

Speaking live from Rome, Livia Galante, an expert on Archaeology and Ancient Roman Topography, will present on the role played by aristocratic women in the ancient Roman society as well as following in the footsteps of the woman who paved the way for future Roman empresses.

Livia Drusilla (58 BCE – 29 CE) was the third wife of emperor Augustus of Rome, mother of emperor Tiberius, and grandmother of emperor Claudius. Like many great women in history, she lived in the shadow of a man, working quietly as both a confidant and an advisor. She served the empire as a devoted wife, standing by her husband’s side in regards to his reform policies, while at the same time turning a blind eye to his unfaithfulness. We’ll discuss how behind the scenes at the imperial court, she spent much of her adult life ensuring her son’s future as heir to Augustus’s throne whether he wanted it or not.

This class will be held virtually via Zoom. The Zoom link will be sent in a reminder email the day before the class takes place. Please email learn@okcmoa.com with questions.

This class is offered through a partnership between OKCMOA and Context Travel, a company offering small-group immersive cultural and historical tours, and online seminars and courses led by Ph.D. and MA-level scholars.
