DUE: MARCH 15, 2017

Downtown Oklahoma City Initiatives, a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to combat community deterioration through public art, beautification projects, and placemaking, is excited to bring back its annual Artist Invitational program. The Artist Invitational serves as a platform for local artists to submit their ideas for public art and placemaking in downtown Oklahoma City that doubles in purpose: to inspire conversation, whimsy, and wonder downtown, and to activate unused space or reinventing existing space in the urban core.

Previously, the Invitational was reserved for a group of hand-selected artists. This year, Downtown Oklahoma City Initiatives staff and board members would like to expand the reach of this project and allow an unlimited number of artists to apply through an open call for the 2017 program.

With community-based participation at its center, an effective placemaking process capitalizes on a local community’s assets, inspiration, and potential, and it results in the creation of quality public spaces that contribute to people’s health, happiness, well-being, and quality of life. For more information on what placemaking is, please visit the Project for Public Spaces website here:

The selection committee is open to a number of ideas for this year’s program. They are interested in seeing submissions for street art, sculptures, murals, signage and wayfinding art, placemaking initiatives, art that solves problems such as lighting or unattractive utilities, art that encourages public interaction, art that doubles as seating, and more. Locations may include, but are not limited to: walls, parks, private or public property, empty storefronts, plazas, underpasses, etc.

All projects must be located in the greater downtown area, with preference given to projects within one of the eight core character districts: Arts District, Automobile Alley, Bricktown, Central Business District, Deep Deuce, Film Row, Midtown, and Park Plaza.
